A WOMAN has revealed the heartwarming moment she left a note for two older men she heard chatting on the train - and got an amazing reply.
Hannah Thornton overheard the two men talking on the train to Liverpool, despite never meeting, and was so heartened by their immediate friendship she decided to write to them.
She tweeted yesterday: "This time last week I got the train to my Grandma's and shared part of my journey with 2 lovely men.
"They'd never met before but instantly hit it off and laughed like they'd been best friends for years. I scribbled a note to them as I got off the train...and I got a reply!"
After writing to her fellow travellers she was stunned to actually hear back from one of them.
Bill wrote to her after she dropped off the note saying her job is to help older people in Sheffield be less isolated.
She told them: "We encourage people all the time to be neighbourly and to share a smile or a nice word with another person, so it's been lovely to hear you both doing an abundance of that."
The younger of the pair, 63-year-old Bill, contacted her and said the entire day had been "bizarre".
He told Hannah that on his way to the station he gave a homeless woman some money and was then interviewed by BBC Radio Sheffield.
Bill told the reporter he also volunteered at an educational charity, which he finds helps with the grief he experiences being recently widowed.
He then met 80-year-old Morris on the train, who was on his way to an Army reunion, and got Hannah's note, with an invitation to volunteer where she works.
He wrote: "He was a really engaging and lovely person to talk to. I didn't manage to open my paper or look at my iPad once. I wish every trip was like that."
After she shared the two notes, thousands of people retweeted them, with dozens pledging to volunteer with older people.
Others told their stories of meetings with strangers and how it had restored their faith in humanity.
One person said they had helped cheer an 85-year-old man over a cup of coffee after meeting in Sheffield's John Lewis.
Another tweeted: "I had a lovely chat with strangers on a train from Sheffield the other day, too.
"I think if more of us did this more often, then what divides us would pale into insignificance more often than not."
Last month we reported how a hard-up student woke up from a nap on the train to find £100 from a kind-hearted stranger.
Ella Johannessen had been talking to her mum on the phone about her financial worries before she dropped off.
