RARE footage captured the moment an Imam performed an exorcism on an Islamic woman believed to be carrying an evil spirit.

The fully-veiled woman kneels on the floor of a mosque before she begins retching and thrashing around on a sofa, as Imam Ayoud Tayeb attempts to rid her of what's know as the "jinn".

The 29-year-old woman had sought help at the Sheffield mosque after suffering from various symptoms including vomiting, pain in the womb, headaches, back pain and poor memory.

She believed she was being affected by black magic and undertook the treatment from the Imam.

Imams regularly carry out these "ruqyah" rituals, designed to help men and women carrying evil spirits which are believed to live inside them.

In the footage, the woman wearing a burqa can be seen rocking as the Imam chats verses from the Quran.

He shouts into a microphone and repeats "can you find God, can you find him?".

The woman begins to scream before picking up a table and holding it over her head.

The Imam then spits holy water into her face in order to control the evil spirit.

Following the exorcism the young woman is said to be recovering at home, with many of her symptoms said to have disappeared.

Imam Ayoub, originally from Kurdistan, said: "She has black magic and the jinni that brought the magic is also in love with her.

"But this is not real love as love does not cause pain and this Jinn has caused many ailments.

"The information about the magic was given by the Jinni when I was speaking to it but it did not say who caused the magic."

"We only operate in the healing and helping to cure them from these evil practices - but magic practising is widespread."

The exorcism is one of around 3,000 performed by 42-year-old Imam Ayoub during the last three years.

As well as serving the community in Sheffield patients come from far afield as Germany, Norway, USA, Sweden and Iraq.

The imam added: "Most of our patients come from the Islamic faith.

"However we have also helped Christians, Sikhs, Hindus and atheists - we do not differentiate between religions or non-religion.

"I enjoy helping people - it is my passion and I enjoying serving God in this way.

"I like using the Quran to heal and witnessing the power of the Quran gives me satisfaction - to heal and see people healed.

"It can make me tired at times and very busy - continuous recitation can give me a sore throat."

An exorcism takes roughly an hour to perform - with Imam Ayoub charging a £60 fee which is used to fund the mosque.

Last year we published disturbing images showing the extreme toll exorcism rituals take on Roman Catholics in Mexico City.

The stark images showed believers with their faces and bodies contorted in pain as pastors and preachers (known as 'exorcistas') seek to cast demons out of their bodies.
