SADIQ Khan has filed an application for a judicial review into the decision to free black cab rapist John Worboys.
The London Mayor has officially asked to look into why it was decided to release the notorious criminal after just nine years behind bars.
Worboys, 60, was thrown in jail in 2009 for a string of sex attacks on 12 women in the back of his cab, but he could be freed in weeks after the Parole Board decided he was no longer a threat.
Mr Khan said: "I'm seeking a judicial review of the Parole Board's decision to release John Worboys."
He said last week that lawyers were preparing a case because he was deeply concerned about Londoner's safety.
Mr Khan said: “Londoners’ safety is my priority. I am deeply worried and unhappy at the Parole Board plan to release John Worboys on to the streets of our city, where many of his victims live and work."
Lawyers for victims of Worboys have confirmed to Sky News they have submitted their own application for a judicial review into the decision to release him.
Justice Secretary David Gauke ruled out such a review just last week - saying there was little chance of success.
"I have decided it would not be appropriate for me . . . to proceed with such a case,” he said.
"I understand that some will be disappointed in my decision but I have acted swiftly to ensure this issue is examined and, hopefully, provide some clarity for victims."
Worboys is due to be released within the next few weeks - but any victims have been urged to come forward to try and keep him behind bars for longer.
The Sun was praised by MPs yesterday after we launched a legal bid to make the Parole Board reveal why they decided to let him out.
Along with the Daily Mail, the Sun has written to them to ask to publish the confidential report that led to the release of Britain's worst sex offender.

And he claimed that the Parole Board had followed all the right procedures.
After the sex attacker was caged police confirmed that many more women had come forward to accuse him of similar crimes.
But he wasn't tried again for them - and cops reassured victims he would remain in jail for life.
