JEREMY Corbyn’s fiercest Labour ally sparked ridicule by saying the party leader was better than WW2 hero Clement Attlee.

Appearing on Kremlin-backed Russia Today, arch left winger Chris Williamson said Mr Corbyn was “the best leader that this party has ever had”.

He said: “I think Jeremy given the opportunity will be a great Prime Minister and will absolutely transform this country."

Labour backbenchers mocked the claim – pointing out that Clement Attlee managed to create the NHS and build a wave of social housing after becoming PM in 1945, as well as helping Sir Winston Churchill defeat the Nazis.

Self-styled ‘moderate’ Chris Leslie said Labour was forgetting its biggest achievements – and becoming a narrow “sect”.

MP John Mann told Mail Online the claim was “absurdly premature” given Mr Corbyn had yet to even set foot in Number 10.

He added: "Clement Attlee won the election – that’s always a big advantage."

Clement Attlee served as Sir Winston Churchill’s deputy during the Second World War in the cross-party crisis Government.

Mr Attlee won a historic election victory in 1945 and extending secondary school education to all children as well as founding the NHS.

Chris Williamson left Labour’s Shadow Cabinet earlier this month after calling for huge increases in council tax.
