The prison in Milton Keynes was last year deemed “barely fit for purpose” in a report. It has huge staff shortages and the highest suicide rate in the country.

A source said: “The morale of staff is important but this is divisive when the prison is in need of  improvement.”

The Ministry of Justice insisted there was a £100 limit on prizes, adding: “It recognises and encourages good performance.”
