That came after Windsor and Maidenhead council leader Simon Dudley warned beggars could present the town in a "sadly unfavourable light" during the wedding.

However this has now been seized on by protesters, with more than 1,000 on Facebook saying that they will attend an event on the day in solidarity with the homeless.

One of the events, organised by left-wing blogger Peter Mills, asked those attending to "dress up as 'homeless' and line the royal wedding route".

reports that one supporter posted: "F*** the Royals". Another wrote: "I will bring my guillotine."

When confronted about others posts he had made about the Queen - one calling her a "leech" - Mr Mills said they "just demonstrate the passion I feel about helping the vulnerable and highlighting the wealth disparity".

Another group looking to hijack the day in Windsor is run by Kunal Singhal, who urged attendees on the day to dress down in solidarity with the homeless.

George Barda, another organiser, was approached by reporters to discuss his views. However after opening the door wearing just his underwear, he said he could not talk because he was meditating.

He later said: "Homelessness is a terrible scourge and drawing attention to it is important."

After calling on the police to remove rough sleepers ahead of the wedding, the council leader has since apologised.

Mr Dudley told The Andrew Peach Show on BBC Radio Berkshire: "I would like to apologise if I was not clear enough in my communication that this was an issue about anti-social behaviour.

"If that message failed to get across the responsibility for that is firmly with me."
