Official guidance includes stocking up on medicines, wrapping up, warming homes to at least 18C and  nipping early symptoms in the bud.

Keith Willett, NHS director for acute care, said: “The NHS is putting into practice our plan for winter but as temperatures are set to reach below freezing, the public can play their part.”

The Met Office says the weather will drop below freezing, with the cold creeping down the country from the North.

It is likely to remain until early next week, with the cold snap expected to result in more A&E admissions for flu, strokes and heart attacks.
