THE SUN SAYS

Britain must rethink how our crisis-ridden NHS is run — and politicians from all sides need to fix it

Conservative and Labour voices must come together in a cross-party effort to rethink the structure of our NHS and how it is paid for

Health rethink

THE NHS’s limits are now fully exposed. It’s time politicians on all sides were brave enough to reinvent it.

Its funding is mind-boggling and rising rapidly. But with a soaring, ageing, increasingly obese population and ever pricier drugs, no sum can ever be enough.

And for all the dedication of its staff, it is still a monument to inefficiency.

Jeremy Corbyn will only ever use it as a weapon. But more serious Labour voices should join a cross-party effort to rethink the extent of care the NHS provides and how it is structured and paid for.

Jeremy Hunt commendably braved the flak yesterday from those dimwits who believe the Government has limitless cash and starves the NHS for fun.

The truth is that the pressure on this archaic system is just too great.

Stark reality

ROYAL Mail is issuing stamps commemorating Game of Thrones — but not Brexit. We love GoT, but that’s farcical.

Stamps WERE issued when we joined the EEC in 1973 and single market in 1992. But they won’t be when we leave.

Royal Mail chiefs doubtless detest Brexit and consider it controversial. But so was joining. Leaving is now the nation’s choice. It is REAL history being made, not historical fantasy on telly.

Royal Mail must be told to reconsider.

Toby, or not?

WE doubt you care much who staffs the new universities regulator. What should bother us all, though, is the Left’s hysterical campaign to prevent a Tory being on it.

Toby Young founded a school, runs an education charity and has worked tirelessly to help working-class kids. But the Left are so used to dominating every public body they have had a hissy-fit.

So they obsess over juvenile remarks he once made on Twitter and his supposed lack of experience. Funny . . . they didn’t kick off about Guardian hack Alan Rusbridger running an Oxford college.
Anyone who truly cares about our universities, and the Corbynista groupthink they now encourage, should take off their political blinkers and trust Young’s talent.

It Greaves us

OUR honours system is a sick joke.

Andrew Adonis, the unelected Blair adviser, is a peer. Nick Clegg, ousted Lib Dem, a knight. Both are devoted, shamefully, to undermining a democratic vote.

Meanwhile footie genius Jimmy Greaves, highest ever scorer for Spurs and fourth on the all-time England list, has nothing. Nil. Not even an MBE.

When top honours are dished out like sweets to establishment cronies but not to genuine sporting heroes the public is right to hold them in contempt.

Give Greavsie his gong.

New Year's honours list includes The Beatles star Ringo Starr, Bee Gees Barry Gibb and former leader of the Liberal Democrats Nick Clegg
