Heartbroken Sky Sports presenter Simon Thomas admits ‘he doesn’t even feel like a family now’ after losing wife Gemma to cancer
The 44-year-old, whose wife died last month, admitted 2018 fills him with 'stomach churning dread' in a heartbreaking social media post
SKY Sports presenter Simon Thomas has admitted he doesn’t “feel like a family now” after the devastating loss of his wife Gemma to cancer.
The former Blue Peter star, 44, posted a heartwrenching message on Twitter in which he expressed his fears for himself and his son as the New Year approaches.
Mother-of-one Gemma, 40, died last month just three days after being diagnosed with the cruel disease.
And Simon says there is a “painful” silence in his home and admits the New Year fills him with a “stomach churning dread.”
He wrote: “I don’t even feel like a family now, it’s me and the boy – the team, the partnership in this challenging journey we now find ourselves on.”
The caring father added that he is also apprehensive about sending his grieving son back to school.
He said: “The school gates where the rhythm of family life is now so hard to be around, and the goodbye to the boy I won’t see for the next few hours.”
On Instagram, the 44-year-old posted a picture of himself hugging his loving wife along with the heartbreaking caption “I’d give everything I have, apart from my precious boy, for one moment like this again.”
Earlier this week, Simon released a photo of his tragic wife saying she is "free from pain" and that she will "forever be with me".
He posted a touching photo of Gemma, 40, silhouetted against a stunning sunset with a pram and another person next to her.
Simon wrote alongside it: "Out of the shadowlands and into the light. Forever with me but free from pain. #lightinthedarkness".
It comes just days after the former Blue Peter presenter revealed his tear-jerking present from eight-year-old son Ethan as they faced their first Christmas alone.
The brave youngster gave his father a mug emblazoned with the words "Dad is my hero".
Grieving Simon revealed Gemma had lost her battle to acute myeloid leukaemia last month, saying he was “crushed with indescribable pain”.
Gemma had only been diagnosed with the killer disease three days earlier when she went to the doctors after feeling unwell.
She began chemotherapy on Tuesday and despite initially responding well, her condition deteriorated and Simon was told on November 24 she had just hours to live.
The mum died later that night surrounded by friends and family.
Since the devastating news, Simon has shared a number of touching tributes to her from himself and their eight-year-old son Ethan.
After Gemma was laid to rest, Simon posted a heartbreaking photo of Ethan stood next to his mum's coffin.
Simon also paid tribute to his wife after the funeral with a heartwarming tweet saying: "Today we said goodbye. I'll always love you darl xx."
A few days ago, as Simon and Ethan face their first Christmas without her, he posted an emotional image of a broken mug with "Mummy" on with the words "Mummy. Broken."
One picture on Instagram of the three of them was captioned: “Team Thomas. Three has become two. Heartbroken and suffocating with grief.”

He previously of his son's grief, saying: "He said he wants Playmobil and other gifts for Christmas, but most of all 'I want mummy back', and I can't help him with that.
"My little boy had a little time with her but she wasn't able to speak to him. She passed away just before 6pm [on November 24]. There was a real sense of peace. Today is the hardest pain I have ever felt ever."
