A STUDENT accused of rape who was put through two years of hell as police withheld messages proving his innocence has said his accuser should remain anonymous.

Liam Allan, 22, was cleared as a trial got underway when lawyers were finally passed messages showing the complainant had begged him for sex and discussed violent rape fantasies.

He is now planning to sue Metropolitan Police but despite his ordeal has shot down calls for his accuser's identity to be made public.

Rape complainants are legally entitled to lifelong anonymity - a right Mr Allan says should be extended to the accused until conviction.

He told ITV1's This Morning: "I think it's fair I would remain anonymous throughout the whole thing and even afterwards.

"For her to remain anonymous I can completely understand at this current point in time."

His mum Lorraine added she never doubted her son's innocence from the moment police arrived at their South London flat and arrested him in September 2015.

She said: "I knew it's not in his nature to do it.

"I did question myself and if I was looking through rose-tinted glasses, you have to. But deep down I never doubted my son."

Officers sat on vital evidence retrieved from the alleged victim that revealed their sex was consensual.

One, sent by the accuser to a female friend on Sept 3 2015, read: "It wasn't against my will or anything".

Other texts showed how she asked for more sex and harboured bondage and rape fantasies.

Metropolitan Police investigators failed to hand over the crucial evidence to prosecutors who went on to charge psychology student Liam.

He faced 12 years' jail after being hauled to court on the false testimony of his accuser — despite the cop leading the investigation allegedly telling him the case was weak.

Mr Allan told the : "I rang [Det Con Mark Azariah] in the last week of February seeking an update.

"At this stage, I hadn’t been charged but it was more than a year since my arrest.

"He said the case had gone high up within the Crown Prosecution Service and the decision would be theirs.

"He said he recommended in his report to the CPS that I should not face charges. He didn’t expand on what he put in his report."

But he was told just hours later as he left a lecture at the University of Greenwich that he would be charged with six rapes and one sexual assault.

The trial against him at Croydon crown court dramatically collapsed on Friday and Det Con Azariah is now the focus of a police probe.

Other texts from the accuser sent on the same day, Sept 3, prove damning, the Mail On Sunday reported.

One read: "Sometimes sex is the number 1 priority, I’m really not joking to be honest I always think with my d*** lol."

She later wrote: "You know it’s always nice to be sexually assaulted without breaking the law."

Mr Allan's lawyer Simone Meerabux said: “Mr Allan lost two years of his life because of gross negligence.

“We are considering legal action against the Met Police and CPS.”

Tory MP Nigel Evans, who was taken to court over false rape claims, said: "I hope the Justice Select Committee can hold a full inquiry into it. Lessons have to be learned."
