Judge demands investigation into why police sat on discs containing 40,000 texts that could have cleared a 22-year-old of rape

A JUDGE has demanded a probe into why police sat on 40,000 texts which could have cleared a rape suspect.

Criminology student Liam Allan, 22, faced ten years in jail after he was accused of raping a fellow student six times.

Yesterday the case against him was thrown out after it emerged that cops failed to release texts proving his innocence.

At Croydon crown court Judge Peter Gower insisted: “Something has gone wrong and it is something the CPS should be considering at the very highest level.”

The court heard the case officer failed to review a computer disc with 40,000 texts sent by the alleged victim.

They included ones where she begged Mr Allan for sex.

She also bragged to pals about violent sex fantasies.

Mr Allan, who said her accusations were revenge for being dumped, spent two years on bail.

Prosecutor Jerry Hayes apologised to Mr Allan.

The ex-Tory MP said: “There could have been a very serious miscarriage of justice.”

Outside the court Mr Allan told The Times: “I feel betrayed by the system.”
