What is a hung parliament, an exit poll and the DUP? Most Googled questions of 2017 revealed – and so many are about politics

BRITS have been forced to turn to Google to help them understand the political climate yet again in 2017.

Today it's revealed that the top two most searched 'What if' questions on the search engine were to do with June's election.

And four out of ten were about politics generally.

'What is a hung parliament?' was searched the most, followed by 'What is an exit poll?'

Coming in fourth was 'What is a General Election?' and ninth was 'What is the DUP?' - the Northern Irish party Theresa May was forced to do a deal with after her election gamble backfired.

The Prime Minister ended up with a hung parliament (where no one party had enough MPs to command a majority in the House of Commons), which was exactly what the exit poll predicted (a snapshot of polls taken outside voting stations throughout the day, which is released at 10pm).

The General Election was the sixth most Googled news event this year in the UK,

The lists are populated based on search terms that had a high spike in traffic in 2017 compared to 2016.

And 'How to vote in the General Election' was the most searched question beginning 'How to'.

Our election was the third most looked up globally too.

Searches for 'Brexit white paper' were up 4,400 per cent and 'What is a hard Brexit?' was up by 800 per cent on last year.
