FAMILIES may no longer be allowed to refuse organ donation under plans to save thousands more lives.

Around 1,100 denied consent last year, Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt revealed.

Many refused because they were unsure of their relative’s wishes.

But some said no even when their loved one had a donor card.

The Government now wants to transform the donation scheme.

It plans to introduce an opt-out system to help save the lives of 6,500 sick Brits on the transplant waiting list.

Mr Hunt is launching a three-month consultation.

The final system will depend on the public’s response.

Mr Hunt said: “Every day, three people die for want of a transplant, which is why our historic plans to transform the way organ donation works are so important.

“As well as changing the law, we need to change the conversation. It can be a difficult subject to broach."

Four in five people say they would donate but less than half that number have registered their wish.
