Theresa May’s Brexit truce could fall apart after Leavers are told concessions to Brussels were ‘meaningless’

Sources with knowledge of the jibe revealed that No 10 had said the 'meaningless' commitment to full alignment between Britain and the EU 'doesn’t mean anything in EU law'

THERESA May's Brexit peace may be hanging by a thread after claims emerged today a Downing Street aide told Boris Johnson and Michael Gove that the key concession to Europe was "meaningless".

A prominent Eurosceptic told that No 10 had said a commitment to “full alignment” between Britain and the EU “doesn’t mean anything in EU law”.

Another source said a Cabinet minister had been told that the "meaningless" provision was only included to trick Ireland into approving the final Brexit deal - a revelation likely to infuriate ministers in Dublin.

A Downing Street spokesman told The Sunday Telegraph: "We do not recognise this account of conversations."

A clause in Friday’s agreement vowed “full alignment” between the UK and the EU if no alternative deal is reached was vital in persuading Dublin to sign up.

Meanwhile, hardline Brexiteers have warned Theresa May she still faces a battle to unite ministers on Brexit.

Some reckon the now-jubilant PM gave away too much to clinch her Brussels talks victory.

That could spell trouble as the Cabinet tries to decide our post-Brexit EU ties.

A senior MP said: “The celebrations would make you think we won a war."

And Theresa May was reported to have had to step in to stop a blazing row between Cabinet Ministers Philip Hammond and Gavin Williamson.
