Aldi port worth £20 beats expensive rivals to scoop top prize at wine ‘Oscars’
Judges praised the Maynard's 1992 Late Bottled Vintage Port's 'fig, prunes, damsons and cinnamon notes' as well as its tiny price-tag
A PORT from Aldi has trounced rivals to scoop a top award at the wine industry “Oscars”.
The £19.99 Maynard's 1992 Late Bottled Vintage Port — touted by the budget store as “smooth and velvety” — wowed judges in blind tastings.
They awarded it a coveted gold medal, praising its “fig, prunes, damsons and cinnamon notes”.
Aldi said of the triumph at the International Wine Awards in London: “We are absolutely delighted.”
In total Aldi won 53 awards for its wine range.
Spokeswoman Julie Ashfield said: “We have seen an increased demand for drinks such as port and sherry – drinks often associated with an older generation - which are now enjoying a revival.
