Glasgow Airport travel chaos as flights are diverted or cancelled over frozen runways
Several flights have been delayed this evening as temperatures plummet across Britain
FLIGHTS have been delayed and diverted at Glasgow Airport tonight after the runway FROZE in bitter temperatures.
Several planes have been delayed this evening and incoming services sent elsewhere as temperatures plummet across Scotland.
A BA flight from London Heathrow that was due to land at 9.40pm was sent to Glasgow Prestwick Airport, while a number of other arrivals were due to be late.
It is understood that not all flights have been affected, however the exact number is unclear.
Commuters reported an emergency service presence at the airport including the Scottish Fire Service.
Both the fire service and Police Scotland refused to comment.
A spokesperson for Glasgow Airport said: "We are experiencing some delays while crews are deicing the ice stands and taxiways.
"Once those areas are safe then flights can head off."
Concerned commuters posted their frustration at the hold-up online.
And one even reported an aircraft had been "damaged" by a skidding vehicle.
Andrew Steel said on Twitter: "@GLA_Airport stuck on BA flight that’s just been damaged by tractor slipping on ice.
"Now captain saying the ice is so bad even firemen struggling to operate safely under it. Hardly sounds like safe conditions being maintained?... #wtf #wheresthegrit"
