He was but still turned up at the annual St Andrews Ball.

Her pals were horrified when they and broke down in tears as he happily posed for photos in his bow tie and black suit.

, 44, said: “It’s grossly insensitive that a student, excluded by the university for violence against women, should be welcomed back in a social setting.

“He was seen laughing, joking and drinking with his mates as if nothing had happened.”

“It’s been such an emotional night for our family. We’ve been unable to sleep and it’s brought everything that happened to Emily back to the surface."

The mum of one of the students at the event said: “Just seeing him brought back a lot of nasty memories.

“My daughter phoned me in tears because she was absolutely devastated. No one could believe he had the nerve to show his face.”

It’s understood Milligan’s appearance led to a toxic atmosphere at the ball at the 4-star Ardoe House Hotel, Aberdeen.

At first Emily’s friends stayed away from him and tried to forget he was there.

But as the night went on they stormed over to his table and confronted him.

The mum added: “They wanted to ask him what the hell he thought he was doing. But his friends surrounded him and protected him.

“I’m gutted that he is still causing havoc. He should have stayed at home.”

Fiend Milligan claimed he throttled Emily after she cheated on him. He also sent texts branding her a “slut”, “whore,” “c**t” and “bitch”.

Her family believe she took her life in her halls of residence hours after her final row with Milligan.

The Edinburgh thug – a direct relative of billionaire Andrew Carnegie - escaped jail but was kicked off his sociology course earlier in the year.

A uni spokeswoman said: “The university and the Students’ Association had no role in the organisation of last night’s event.

“However, the wellbeing of our students is our number one priority, and we are liaising with the organisers to offer all available support to anyone who was affected.”
