What is a full moon party?

Hosted monthly on the night of the full moon, the event originally started in 1985.

The first party was just a gathering of 20-30 people who celebrated seeing the moon at its fullest on the beach at Ko Pha Ngan and island off Thailand.

News of the parties spread by word of mouth and now they attract between 5 and 30 THOUSAND people each month.

What's the safety advice for those attending a full moon party?

We know, we know... no one wants to listen to the safety instructions before a party but even the British government has officially warn tourists to exercise caution at the parties. So listen up.

RULE 1. Be sure you know what booze you're buying.

If you want to get a bit tipsy at the party make sure you are buying reputable brands from real shops and not beach vendors.

Also be sure the bottles were properly sealed before you opened them.

RULE 2. Wear shoes.

Yes you're on a beach, but people burn their feet and legs on discarded cigarettes and broken glass.

Rule 3. No drugs.

Seriously, don't be a muppet. Drugs laws in Thailand are strict and police enforcement is stepped up during the parties.

Shockingly even the drug dealers have been known to dob in those who are getting high.

Aside from not being sure what you're taking and the effect it'll have on you... you don't want to end up in a Thai jail.

Rule 4. Make sure you're hotel/hostel has good security

Some opportunistic thieves sweep through the tourist spots stealing people's things while everyone is out at the party.

Stay somewhere with good security and use the safe.
