PRITI Patel has made headlines once again, since announcing that she was making a Tory leadership bid.
But who is the controversial politician’s husband Alex Sawyer? Here’s everything you need to know about the ex-Home Secretary partner.
Alex Sawyer is the husband of British politician Priti Patel.
Ms Patel served as Secretary of State for the Home Department between July 2019 and September 2022.
She was elected Conservative MP for Witham in May 2010.
Priti hired her husband in 2014 to work as a part-time office manager.
In August 2017, it was revealed that Priti Patel had stopped employing her husband.
It came after she was criticised for paying him tens of thousands of pounds to run her office while he held down two other jobs - one of which was as a marketing consultant for Nasdaq, the US stock exchange.
She vowed to unite the Tories after their disastrous result in the 2024 general election, which saw the party reduced from 365 seats to 121 seats in the House of Commons.
Priti Patel married Alex Sawyer in 2004.
The couple had met while working in public relations.
A few years after they wed, Priti Patel and Alex Sawyer welcomed a son named Freddie, who was born at St John’s Hospital in Chelmsford in August 2008.
Shortly after the birth of their son, Ms Patel said: "He is very long and skinny. He is an Essex boy now and will be going to events and functions with me from the end of next month. He is part of the Witham Conservative Party.
"I would like to thank the staff at both hospitals as they really did taken great care of us."
In February 2021, the mum and politician shared a rare look into her life as a mother after she revealed that she was given a ticking off by teachers of her son at an online parents' evening and admitted that homeschooling had been challenging.
She told The Sun: “I think I might need to spend a bit more time with my son to help his homework going forward.”
Ms. Patel added: ‘’Homeschooling is a challenge for every family, it really is.
“I'd really just like to thank the teachers and pay tribute to all schools for the remarkable work that they're doing and just to say to all pupils around the country really keep going.’’
