THIS is the heart-stopping moment a reckless commuter jumps across two platforms to catch the last train home - before it comes within inches of killing him.

Footage released by Sydney Trains shows the unnamed man pacing up and down a platform at Banksia station as a train sets off next to him.

As it passes, he leans over the platform to check the coast is clear - but spots his train racing down the opposite tracks.

After hesitating for a second, he decides to risk it, jumping down onto the tracks and sprinting to the next platform.

As the desperate driver slams the brakes, the man hauls himself onto the platform with just inches separating him from death.

A shocked onlooker stands open-mouthed as the lucky commuter finishes with a perfect action roll.

The pair briefly discuss the incident before boarding the train as if nothing has happened.

New South Wales Transport Minister Andrew Constance blasted: "That is just reckless, stupid, life-threatening behaviour. It defies logic. It is just the most stupid, reckless act you could undertake.

"Sometimes if trains are delayed, this is what causes it."

Sydney Trains Chief Executive Howard Collins added: "This is dangerous behaviour that has to stop. It’s beyond comprehension what goes through people’s minds when they behave like this. It’s time to put a stop to this foolishness.

"We know drivers who have never driven again, who have had to be counselled, supported for several months because of this behaviour"

"These are mindless and thoughtless acts that needlessly put lives at risk. They not only delay our services but can be quite traumatising for our customers and our staff who witness these acts."
