Benedict Cumberbatch spotted filming latest movie in major city – but it’s not where you think
Sherlock star was on location for filming of TV programme adapting Edward St Aubyn's Patrick Melrose novels.
STAR British actor Benedict Cumberbatch has been spotted on the set of his latest film located in New York city.
However, the production isn't being filmed in the Big Apple but in the central streets of Glasgow which have been given a makeover.
The Sherlock actor was seen wearing a large coat between takes today while preparing for his role as Patrick Melrose in a TV adaptation of the books of the same name.
American flags were added to buildings while parking meters were covered and street signs were changed to transform the Scottish city's Bothwell Street into a New York lookalike.
Adding to the illusion was a typical New York-style yellow taxi in front of which Cumberbatch appeared to film a scene.
Period drama Melrose is based on Edward St Aubyn's acclaimed series of semi-autobiographical Patrick Melrose novels.
As well as starring in the titular role, Cumberbatch will serve as the executive producer.
The series has been written by One Day author David Nicholls and stars Luther and Game Of Thrones actress Indira Varma.
Patrick Melrose is described as an "aristocratic and outrageously funny playboy" who turns to substance abuse in order to escape the memories of his abusive childhood.
Each episode in the series, a joint venture by Sky Atlantic and Showtime, is based on one of St Aubyn's books, including the Man Booker shortlisted Mother's Milk.
It is thought the series will air in 2018 and will also be shot in locations including London and the south of France.
This is not the first big budget production which has used Glasgow's city centre - known for its New York-style grid system - as a substitute for an American city.
Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight Rises and Brad Pitt's zombie epic World War Z both filmed scenes in Scotland's largest city.
