Where is HMP Barlinnie?

HMP Barlinnie can be found in the Glasgow suburb of Riddrie in the north east of the city.

The building was designed by Major General T.B. Collinson and originally built in a rural area that has since become more residential.

It was first opened in 1882 and has been the site of several important moments in British penal history.

Ten executions took place at the prison which was also later the site of the "Special Unit" which focused on rehabilitation rather than punishment from 1973 to 1994.

How many prisoners are held at he prison?

The prison holds around 1,600 prisoners.

It is the larges prison in Scotland which has the main focus of holding on remand and short term prisoners sent in by the courts in the west of the country.

The lock up is colloquially known as the "Bar-L" in some parts of Scotland.

How many hangings did Albert Pierrepoint conduct there?

Albert Pierrepoint, Britain's longest serving hangman, conducted several executions at the Scottish prison.

Pierrepoint himself executed six of a total of ten executions carried out at the jail.

The first two were carried out by his uncle Thomas and the final two at Barlinnie were carried out by Harry Allen.

All of those hanged had been convicted of murder.
