RUSSIA has denied any role in the assassination of John F Kennedy before secret files about the murder are made public today.
Fascinating documents due to be released by the US government are expected to shed light on Harvey Lee Oswald's trip to the Soviet Union.
Some claim Oswald, who was identified as the assassin by five official investigations into the death, might have contacted Soviet secret services and undergone special training.
But this afternoon Russia moved quickly to dismiss any suggestions they had a role in the death of JFK in Dallas on November 22 1963.
Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova told reporters: "For decades, information has been kept under lock and key.
"If even here wild insinuations are hurled at Russia, that would be a shame, because it is information, and not disinformation that people want."
The 3,000 never-before-seen secret files, which President Donald Trump confirmed could be made public on Saturday, are due for release following a series of hearings in 1992.
Conspiracy theorists have long claimed Oswald was not the only shooter in Dallas and in his own words "just a patsy" in a major cover up.
DEATH PLOT? JFK files reveal FBI knew Lee Harvey Oswald met with KGB assassination chief at Soviet Embassy
This is because Oswald was said to have fired from the sixth floor of a book depository behind the president's motorcade, when it appeared the final shot captured graphically on amateur film was from the front.
While the files are not expected to reveal details of a cover up, they could provide information on what Oswald did in Russia when he applied for citizenship to the country in 1959.
Oswald spent two years in Russia, where he met future wife Marina Prusakova, before requesting the return of his US passport from the Moscow Embassy and returning back to the States with his partner and their infant daughter.
The US and Soviet Union, the world's foremost superpowers at the time, were in the midst of the Cold War with bitter relations.
Despite these links, Russian's Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Zakharvoa quashed any suggestions that that its former secret KGB services orchestrated the assassination.
"I can’t even imagine how one can distort this topic to such a degree," she said.
But she admitted: "I understand perfectly well why the international community - historians, political scientists and many other people who have for many years tried to find out the truth - are so captivated by this topic."
The JFK files revealed Russia feared an 'irresponsible' US general could launch a revenge missile strike in the wake of John F Kennedy's assassination.
