How does probation work?

Probation is the suspension of a jail sentence that allows a person convicted of a crime the chance to remain in the community, instead of going down.

It requires that convict to follow certain court-ordered rules and conditions under the supervision of a probation officer.

Typical conditions may include performing community service, meeting with your probation officer, refraining from using illegal drugs or excessive alcohol.

It can also mean avoiding certain people and places and appearing in court during requested times.

What does the National Probation Service do?

The National Probation Service for England and Wales is a statutory criminal justice service which is responsible for supervising offenders in the community.

Its officer also compile reports to for magistrates and judge to help them with their sentencing.

In Scotland there is no probation service and the job is done by social work departments of councils.

Northern Ireland has its own separate probation service.

How much do officers get paid?

Entrants start as probation service officers (PSOs).

The salary range for PSOs is £22,039 to £27,373 on the NPS Pay Band 3.

Salaries for qualified probation officers range from £29,038 to £36,084 (Band 4).
