THIS is the moment a man was caught loading donations left outside a charity shop into a wheelie bin - before horrified passers-by make him give it back.

He was challenged by shocked members of the public after they saw him apparently rifling through bags left for a Cancer Research UK branch.

The man tells the people chastising him he "doesn't understand" when they catch him at the branch in Ashby-de-la-Zouch, Leicestershire.

Angela Sherratt, who filmed him, claims the "well dressed" individual's refuse bin was full of donations, but eventually he tipped it back onto the floor and dragged his bin away.

Angela said she decided to film and approach him with her partner John Abell, 50, after spotting somebody walking around the bin bags just after 7pm on October 22.

The 54-year-old from Ashby said: “You just don't expect to see that. It's a cancer charity. Everybody knows somebody with cancer. It's just vile.

“He didn't really look like he was bothered. He was still looking in the bags as he was putting them back.

“He just said he didn't speak any English and that he didn't understand what we were saying.

“I don't think he gave a damn. We kept pointing out it was a Cancer Research shop and he'd say he didn't understand. That's complete rubbish.

“He wasn't just taking things out of the bags. He was putting whole bin liners in the bin. There were three or four bags of stuff. That bin was chocker.”

In the video, he appears to roughly tip out the remains of the wheelie bin before casually strolling away with it down the road.

Angela, a company director, said: “I'd walked towards him and saw there was another guy with him with a high vis jacket.

“I started to ask questions, and it turned out the guy with the high vis had been driving and had got out of his car to tell him he couldn't do that as well.

“I started saying 'stop it' and that this is what people have left for the shop.

“He was ripping the bags and looking to see what was inside.

“There were clothes and toys in there, including brand new boxes of kids' toys. Then he just left it in a pile.

“He didn't seem to be in need. I was asking him, 'do you need this stuff?' and shouting, 'why do you need this?'

“He didn't need help. Not at all. He was well dressed and wearing quite trendy jeans.”

She added: “I wasn't thinking about my own safety, but I'd probably do the same again.

“The bags often get left outside the shop. On a Sunday we'll walk past and see them and say they've got a lot of work to do on Monday.

“But no one would think to steal from there. It's a low life thing to do.

“It makes you think, how many other times has that been happening at the weekends? Someone's not going to go into the shop the next day to say that they left five bags of stuff and ask if they got it all.”

A spokesperson for Leicestershire Police said: "Officers are investigating the theft of a donations left for a charity shop in Market Street, Ashby.

"The incident took place around 7pm on Sunday (22 October) and enquiries are ongoing into the report.

"If anyone witnessed the theft or knows the identity of the person responsible they are advised to contact 101, quoting crime reference number 17*457588."

Julie Byard, head of trading at Cancer Research UK, said: “It’s extremely disappointing if thefts occur as well as upsetting for our dedicated shop staff and volunteers, who raise a huge amount of money for our life-saving research.

“While we are grateful for all donations, we do ask that they are dropped off in store rather than left outside when our shops are closed."
