Donald Trump confirms secret JFK records will be opened next week
- The US President tweeted earlier today that he will open 'long blocked' files about the murder of JFK in Dallas in 1963
- The actual decision to unlock the files was taken after a series of hearings in 1992
DONALD Trump has claimed credit for the fact that never-before-seen classified records on the assassination of John F Kennedy are to be opened.
The US President tweeted earlier today that he will open "long blocked" files about the murder in 1963.
Around 3,000 never-before-seen classified files were scheduled to be released next week by the National Archives - unless blocked by the President - as ordered by the US Congress after a set of hearings in the matter in 1992.
Trump has confirmed they will be released.
He wrote on Twitter: "Subject to the receipt of further information, I will be allowing, as President, the long blocked and classified JFK FILES to be opened."
Kennedy, the 35th president of the USA, was killed in Dallas on November 22, 1963.
The alleged lone assassin Lee Harvey Oswald was arrested for the crime but killed by Jack Ruby two days later.
Horrific footage, perhaps the most famous amateur film ever captured, showed the moment Kennedy was shot dead in front of cheering crowds, sat next to his wife Jackie.
The murder sparked a number of conspiracy theories, with many believing more than one person fired at the president and there had been a cover up.
Oswald was said to have shot from the sixth floor of a book depository behind the president's motorcade.
But many doubters claim the fatal bullet which struck Kennedy in the head appeared to have been fired from a position in front of the vehicle.
What are the main JFK assassination theories?
The official explanation – Lee Harvey Oswald was the sole gunman
Former US Marine Oswald was a proud communist, who briefly defected to the USSR, and was a supporter of Cuban leader Fidel Castro.
He was allegedly motivated to kill the President by Kennedy’s hard line approach to Cuba including a botched invasion in 1961 known as the Bay of Pigs.
The Mafia hired Oswald and other hitmen to murder the President.
Kennedy had scored a controversial election victory over future-Republican President Richard Nixon in 1960.
It is alleged that the Democrat used his family’s mob connections to swing the vote in both Texas and Illinois.
But rather than thanking the mafia for allegedly helping him, Kennedy and his brother Robert, who was also assassinated in 1968, cracked down on organised crime while in office.
The CIA hired underworld killers to carry out a daring deep state assassination
In revenge for Kennedy allegedly “stealing” the 1960 election, a group of right-wing CIA operatives hired mafia hit men or foreign assassins to carry out the high profile murder.
Kennedy was seen as a dangerous figure by many on the far right of the US political spectrum.
His critics thought his handling of the Bay of Pigs was weak and that he was not tough enough in dealing with the USSR who were taking over Eastern Europe.
How many shooters were there?
Most conspiracy theories claim between two or three shooters were involved in the killing.
Aside from Oswald in the Book Depository building, another gunman is believed to have fired shots from the grassy knoll which was across the road.
A third killer is believed by many to have shot the President from the Dal-Tex Building which was also on the other side of the street from Oswald.
The classified files were due for release before Thursday (October 26) under .
Dozens of files are also responses to conspiracy theories following the Oliver Stone film JFK.
It is thought the files could shed light on the movements of Oswald before the killing including visits to Soviet and Cuban embassies.
A SECOND KILLER? JFK conspiracy theory in overdrive as sketch by surgeon who tried to save president suggests there were TWO gunmen involved in assassination
The release will include more than 30,000 documents that have been previously made public.
Recently, it emerged a drawing by the surgeon who tried to save Kennedy's life could sensationally prove he was shot by two different gunmen.
Dr Robert McClelland held JFK's head as he went into theatre at Parkland Hospital after he was gunned down.
He noted that the horrific fatal wound to the back of the President's head was from a bullet exiting the skull rather than entering it.
