Drunken football fan gets 18 months’ prison sentence for attacking a referee during a Cup final match
A soccer fan received jail time after attacking a referee for sending off three of his team's players during a Cup final. Scott Prew knocked Bill Pashby to the floor, dislocating the official's shoulder and causing severe tendon damage.
He was stretchered off and taken to hospital. The non-league match was abandoned. Prew, 23, had seen Eastway Sports miss a penalty, suffer a goal ruled out and have two men dismissed as they trailed Goal Sports 2-1.
But he flipped when the ref sent off a third in North Yorkshire’s Scarborough & District Saturday League Trophy.
Prosecutor Austin Newman said: “He’d been drinking. He discarded a can of beer as he ran on. Mr Pashby fell, lost consciousness and dislocated a shoulder.” Mr Pashby added: “This is the first time this has happened to me. Younger refs pack it in because of abuse.”
York crown court’s Judge Paul Batty said: “It’s intolerable that drunks feel they can take a potshot at a ref.”
Prew, of Scarborough, admitted ABH and got 18 months’ jail. Goal Sports were given the cup.
