Dramatic moment cops haul driver from sinking car moments before it vanishes underwater
Police in Sydney suspect the woman was drug-affected when she drove the black hatchback off a pier in an attempt to avoid them just after 2pm
A SENIOR cop heroically saved a woman from a sinking car just seconds before it disappeared into the Georges River near Sydney today.
Police suspect the woman was on drugs when she drove the black hatchback off a pier in an attempt to avoid them just after 2pm.
Police were responding to a domestic violence call-out at the woman’s nearby home.
Footage taken by a police helicopter shows cops pull up to the shoreline and wade into the water after the woman.
As the car began to sink further one officer, a local chief inspector, dived into the water and began swimming frantically for the driver’s side door.
He signalled for the woman to open the window, while he tried to heave the door open.
A second officer arrived, passing him a baton, which the chief inspector used to smash the window.
The woman’s leg was caught and she was pulled under water just as the senior officer reefed her from the car.
Four other officers were surrounding the car by that time and helped the woman to shore.
The woman was taken to Bankstown Police Station where she was being treated by paramedics.
