Iranian hackers behind a ‘massive cyber attack’ targeting MPs and Theresa May
Secret intelligence report has found around 9,000 email accounts - including the PM's - were subject to a 12 hour attack
IRANIAN hackers were behind a massive cyberattack on MPs' emails accounts - including ones used by Theresa May, according to a secret intelligence report.
Some 9,000 accounts, including those belonging to the prime minister were subjected to a 12 hour attack on June 23.
Ninety accounts were compromised in the hack that Russia was initially blamed for but the attack has since been tracked to Tehran, the Times reports.
It is thought to be Iran’s first cyberattack on Britain and the motive is not yet known.
Downing Street has refused to comment on the story.
Senior British officials acknowledged that the revelation had complicated Mrs May’s response to Mr Trump.
They told The Times it showed why the US should get behind efforts to contain Iran’s nuclear programme.
Britain, France and Germany have all voiced concern at Donald Trump’s refusal to back the Iran nuclear deal. He said without toughening it up “it will be terminated”.
Theresa May, Angela Merkel and Emmanuel Macron said it was “in our shared national security interest”.
