Ninety accounts were compromised in the hack that Russia was initially blamed for but the attack has since been tracked to Tehran, the Times reports.

It is thought to be Iran’s first cyberattack on Britain and the motive is not yet known.

The revelation comes as Mrs May attempts to put pressure on President Donald Trump to salvage the Iran nuclear deal.

Downing Street has refused to comment on the story.

Senior British officials acknowledged that the revelation had complicated Mrs May’s response to Mr Trump.

They told The Times it showed why the US should get behind efforts to contain Iran’s nuclear programme.

Britain, France and Germany have all voiced concern at Donald Trump’s refusal to back the Iran nuclear deal. He said without toughening it up “it will be terminated”.

Theresa May, Angela Merkel and Emmanuel Macron said it was “in our shared national security interest”.
