Where is HMP Long Lartin, what happened in the October prison riot and is Ian Watkins a prisoner there?

RIOT officers dealt with a disturbance at the high-security Long Lartin prison involving a large number of prisoners who became violent.

The trouble started on the evening of October 11 and had been quelled by 2am the next day, after 10 Tornado teams, were sent in to deal with about 80 inmates - some reportedly armed with pool balls. Here's the lowdown on what happened.

Where is HMP Long Lartin?

HMP Long Lartin is a maximum security jail in Worcestershire which holds up to 622 male inmates.

The Category A men's prison has housed a number of high-profile inmates including radical Islamic cleric Abu Hamza and murderer Christopher Halliwell.

In December 2016, a mass riot in Birmingham prison saw guards attacked with pool balls after lags stole keys and freed 500 inmates.

Last month, two prisoners at the Worcestershire prison were convicted of murdering a fellow prisoner – making it the fourth prisoner killed  at the jail in the last four years.

The three were child murderer Subhan Anwar strangled in 2013, killer John York beaten to death in 2015 and in June 2016, Sidonio Eugenio Teixeira was killed using a rock wrapped in a pair of socks.

What happened in the prison riot at HMP Long Lartin?

Prison staff were reportedly attacked with pool balls during a disturbance at a high-security prison on the evening of October 11.

Specialist Tornado squads were dispatched to high security Long Lartin prison to deal with about 80 inmates in a bid to restore order to E wing of the Worcestshire prison.

The Prison Service said the incident had been "successfully resolved"  the following morning.

No staff or inmates were injured.

The Ministry of Justice said: "We do not tolerate violence in our prisons, and are clear that those responsible will be referred to the police and could spend longer behind bars."

Who is Ian Watkins?

Lostprophets front man Ian Watkins is currently serving a prison sentence for a string of sickening child sex offences.

He was jailed for 29 years after admitting 13 charges in 2013 including the attempted rape of a baby and the sexual assault of a child under 13.
Watkins was transferred to HM Prison Long Lartin in 2014, so that he could be closer to his mother after she had a kidney transplant.

He was then transferred to HM Prison Rye Hill in Northamptonshire.
