THE title "junior doctor" could be scrapped from the NHS after a leading medical figure said doctors need job titles that give them "the respect they deserve".

Chief medical officer, Dame Sally Davies, has backed a campaign to rename doctors led by academics at Oxford University that aims to make doctors feel more valued.

They claim that the term "junior doctor" is "discriminatory and belittling" and call for a return to "senior house office" and "registrar".

There are more than 52,000 junior doctors training to become consultants.
