BRITAIN is being hit by major cyber attacks nearly twice a day, the new head of GCHQ has warned.
Jeremy Fleming said the UK’s spying agency had treated its cyber security unit as a “poor relation” for too long.
He vowed to use the government’s recent injection of cash to bolster the National Cyber Security Centre to stop online criminals targeting Britain.
Cyber experts received 1,131 reports of hacks — with 590 classed as “significant”.
These included the attack on the NHS in May, when WannaCry ransomware hit computers, forcing hospitals to cancel operations.
Another cyber attack targeted Parliament.
Speaking on the first-year anniversary of the NCSC, Mr Fleming declared: “GCHQ’s role has always been to collect and use intelligence to disrupt, divert and frustrate our adversaries.
“We’ve been doing this since 1919 and we’re very good at it. But we cannot afford to stand still.”
