Internet flooded with memes poking fun at Theresa May’s disastrous conference speech
THIS was meant to be the moment Theresa May turned the tide and won back angry voters with a rip-roaring speech at the Conservative Party conference after the General Election disappointment.
Instead the Prime Minister endured a harrowing 66 minutes in which she faced prop failures, coughing fits and a gag by a serial prankster.
One historian Guy Walter concluded: "It's hard to think of a more diabolically disastrous and cringe-worthy conference speech in modern political history."
Mrs May fell victim to TV prankster Simon Brodkin, who handed her a P45, struggled to get her words out due to a cough and then to add insult to injury several letters fell from the huge back drop slogan behind her.
Twitter was flooded with jokes about the calamitous speech.
Numerous memes and photos mocked the keynote address, which May will want to quickly forget.
Many social media commentators compared the speech to bungling politicians embarrassing themselves on the public stage in hit BBC show The Thick of It.
One picture showed the hapless cop Frank Drebin (Leslie Neilsen) from Naked Gun standing behind a building engulfed in flames with the caption: "Nothing to see here."
Another displayed a cough medicine captioned "strong and strepsil", a play on the Conservative election motto "strong and stable".
Although it's very unlikely to bring the PM much comfort, one Twitter user pointed out it "could have been worse", referencing Judy Finnigan's blouse unbuttoning in front of a stunned audience at the TV Brit Awards in 2000.
