Theresa May targets young voters by freezing annual tuition fees at £9,250
THERESA May will launch a massive pitch for young voters today with help for skint students and first-time home-buyers.
The PM will announce a major rethink of tuition fees, backed by immediate action to put an extra £360 in the pockets of graduates.
She also plans a £10billion expansion of the Help to Buy scheme, which will help 135,000 more people to get a foot on the housing ladder.
In an exclusive interview with The Sun on Sunday, she said: “Too many young people fear they are going to be worse off than their parents.
“We have listened to those concerns and we are going to act to offer a fairer deal for students and young people.”
Mrs May will order a complete overhaul of student finance and funding. Tuition fees will be frozen at £9,250 with a £250 rise to £9,500 planned for next year scrapped.
And the amount graduates must earn before they start student loan repayments will be raised from £21,000 to £25,000.
Mrs May will also take action to tackle the housing crisis — and is committed to delivering a million new homes by 2020.
The switch was dubbed “Labour Lite” by some MPs who fear she is allowing Corbyn’s success in wooing the young to dictate Tory policy.
RUTH TALKS ON LEADER
SENIOR Tory Ruth Davidson held private leadership talks with former prime ministers, it has emerged.
Ms Davidson, tipped as a future leader, revealed they followed June’s disastrous General Election result.
The discussions were with David Cameron and Sir John Major as well as former Chancellor George Osborne.
Ms Davidson, who leads the Scottish Conservatives, said: “There was a lot of discussion about who could win future elections.”
