Mackerel could hold the secret to weight loss — because ‘it makes us feel FULL’, scientists claim

Other foods including avocado, plums and lentil contain amino acids which tell your brain that you've had enough to eat

MACKEREL could hold the secret to weight loss — because it makes us feel full, scientists have declared.

They say the satisfied feeling is caused by a reaction in the brain.

Pork and avocado are also among foods found to make people eating them feel full.

The experts said brain cells called tanycytes detect nutrients in food and help control appetite.

Some foods contain types of amino acids that stimulate tanycytes more than others.

They also include sirloin steak, chicken, plums, apricots, lentils and almonds, according to research published in journal Molecular Metabolism.

In addition, the foods are packed with protein — known to satisfy hunger and keep us feeling full for longer. Dr Nicholas Dale, professor of neuroscience at the University of Warwick which did the study, said: “Amino acid levels in blood and brain following a meal are an important signal that imparts the sensation of feeling full.

“Finding that tanycytes sense amino acids has significant implications for finding new ways to help control weight.”
