HUMANS could live on the Moon and Mars in natural underground ­tunnels, scientists believe.

The caves, caused by ancient volcanic activity, would protect them from deadly cosmic radiation.

European Space Agency astronauts have begun training in tunnels 100ft wide on Lanzarote.
But Italian scientists said caves on the Moon and Mars could be up to 1km wide and several hundred kilometres long due to lower gravity.

Riccardo Pozzobon, of the University of Padua, said they could house significant settlements.
