DONALD Trump has vowed to "totally destroy" North Korea while insisting that "rocket man" Kim Jong-un is on a "suicide mission for himself" in his first speech at the UN.

The US President also branded the nuke-wielding Kim regime "depraved" before appearing to threaten military action against the crackpot country if the dictator does not change course.

Loud murmurs filled the United Nations General Assembly hall in New York when Trump issued his sternest warning yet to despot Kim whose ballistic missile launches and nuclear tests have rattled the globe.

The Republican firebrand said unless the hermit kingdom backs down "we will have no choice than to totally destroy North Korea. Rocket man is on a suicide mission for himself and his regime."

He urged UN member states to work together to isolate the Kim government until it ceases its "hostile" behaviour.

A junior North Korean diplomat in the delegation's front-row seat reportedly walked out in protest before Trump's speech.

The brash billionaire also look a thinly-veiled swipe at both China and Russia while addressing the UN assembly.

While insisting nations should reject threats to sovereignty, Trump said member states should “uphold sovereignty from the Ukraine to the South China Sea."

Russia annexed the region of Crimea in 2014 while also backing militant separatists in eastern Ukraine.

China, who is North Korea's only major ally, has also aggressively asserted control over disputed waters in the South China Sea.

The Manhattan property magnate also vowed to spend "$700billion on military and defence" declaring "very soon our military will be the strongest it has ever been."

Trump also urged fellow sovereign nations to take on his isolationist approach.

After saying as US President he will always "defend America's interests above all else" he called on other world leaders to "always put YOUR countries first.”

He said the US would "no longer be taken advantage of” and "sign one-sided deal where America gets nothing in return."

The six-day meeting opened this morning with a speech by Secretary-General Antonio Guterres who said the world "must not sleep walk our way into the war" when discussing the threat of North Korea.

Before Trump's speech, the US United Nations ambassador Nikki Haley also said North Korea will be "destroyed" it if continues with "reckless behaviour"

Haley spoke out about the "military options on the table" as she said the US has exhausted all avenues for dealing with Kim's threats.

Appearing on CNN's State of the Union program, she said: "If North Korea keeps on with this reckless behaviour, if the United States has to defend itself or defend its allies in any way, North Korea will be destroyed, and we all know that and none of us want that.
