WE MAY PAY EU

Theresa May set to push ahead with plans for £30bn Brexit divorce bill – which has ‘almost unanimous’ support from cabinet

THERESA MAY is set to push ahead with plans to pay Brussels a £30bn Brexit divorce bill - which has "almost unanimous" support from the cabinet.

The Prime Minister is set to use a speech this week to signal that Britain will continue paying into the EU budget for up to three years after we quit.

And everyone's on board with the plans, apart from the Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson who is fighting to lower it to around £10billion.

But the EU have demanded up to £90billion, putting her on course for a showdown.

Eurocrats plan to use the transition deal as a chance to squeeze even more money out of Britain.

Damian Green, the Prime Minister's right-hand man, hinted yesterday that Britain was prepared to put an offer on the table this week.

He said, when asked whether payments would end after 2019: "Let's see."

And he added: "I think that the other capitals of Europe, the governments and the commission, I hope and expect will welcome what the Prime Minister has to say.

"You know we can see where they key points at issue are and they will be addressed in the Prime Minister's speech."

The PM will fly out to Florence in the coming days and spell out her vision for Brexit Britain and future ties with Europe.

But it risks being overshadowed after Mr Johnson's Brexit intervention on Saturday hinting that the NHS should get up to £350m extra per week.

He told her to forget paying exessive sums into the EU after 2019 - in a huge challenge to her authority.

And he also confirmed that Britain would continue to pay to be a part of organisations such as crime-fighting body Europol.

It was claimed last week that the Government has already set aside the cash hidden in its financial forecasts.

One EU official : "There is a contribution to make for that single market participation which is independent and on top of any debts from the past."
