Loony flat-earther puts up sign on beach trying to prove his theory and urges sceptics to ‘wake up’
The sign said that people need to "do research" and watch a video showing 200 "proofs" the earth is not round
A LOONY flat-earther has put up sign on a beach trying to prove his theory, urging sceptics to "do research".
The sign has a hand drawn illustration beside a note telling people to "wake up" to the idea that the world is actually flat.
"Do Research!!" the notice commands. "YouTube: 200 Proofs Earth is NOT a Spinning Ball By Eric Duboy. Wake Up."
The poster was erected on a wooden post at a beach on the south east coast of New Zealand's south island.
Dr Stephen Voss spotted the bulletin and posted it on Facebook, writing: "Spotted on our walk to Lawyers Head this afternoon, it appears that the flat earth society have infiltrated St Kilda.
"Funny how they equate doing research with watching YouTube video."
Speaking to the Sun Online, Stephen said: "I was unaware of any local flat-earth group, so it is a bit of a surprise.
"Of course this sign may just be from a single nutter rather than a whole group of them."
He joked: "I'd like to think us Kiwis are a little less susceptible to this nonsense."
The YouTube video mentioned is a two hour long clip detailing 200 "proofs" that the world is flat.
Eric Dubay, who describes himself as a "34-year-old American living in Thailand", wrote underneath the video: "Here is 20x the amount of proofs your government has ever given you that you are NOT living on a spinning ball planet.
"Please sit your friends and family down to watch this most important documentary and help share this on all your social media accounts so we can wake humanity up to this greatest deception and mother of all conspiracies."
It has been watched more than 1,770,000 times.
This flat earth story comes just days after YouTube vlogger D Marble attempted to turn centuries of scientific research on its head with a ridiculous stunt involving a spirit level on a plane.
The barmy conspiracy theorist filmed himself placing a spirit level on his plane seat arm rest to see if the bubble would move.
The self-professed "realist" said: “We’ve been living a lie all this time and the planet is actually completely flat.
“If we’re living on a spinning ball or globe, according to curvature maths, the plane should be constantly dipping its nose forwards."
But social media users were quick to point out a succession of glaring errors in his test, including the fact that he did not see the curve in the horizon.
The flat-earther took a 23-minute timelapse of the spirit level during the journey.
He said: “As you'll see there was no measurable compensation for curvature.”
Viewers were baffled by the unusual experiment, which was originally filmed in June and has started to circulate again on social media.
Matty Young tweeted: “You think he would have looked out the window at the curve in the horizon like at least one time.”
Another tweeted: “This is like the perfect combination brilliant and stupid.”
There is a growing community of people who reject “globehead” thinking and insist that the world is flat.
These flat-earthers believe our planet is encircled by a giant, heavily-policed ice wall and that gravity is just an unproven theory.
They also claim Nasa is a fraudulent organisation and that all the photographs and video footage we have from space are CGI.
