SICK OR TREAT?

Fury as eBay fancy dress firms flog ‘sick’ Halloween costumes of Taliban bombers, Nazi officers and escaped ‘psycho’ patients

FANCY dress firms are selling sick Halloween costumes on eBay including Taliban "Terrorists", Nazi officers and escaped "psycho" patients.

The Taliban costume comes with a bomb, beige tunic and dark brown waistcoat and is on sale just a week after Manchester Arena reopened after being targeted by an Islamic State-inspired suicide attack.

This costume was still on sale today from Mad About Costume, with one being marked as already sold in the build up to Halloween - but a spokesperson from eBay said it had since been removed.

The online firm describes themselves as one of the UK’s must trusted costume websites with 10,000 items in stock and ply their trade on eBay.

This comes days after Paul Hollywood stunned Great British Bake Off fans when he was pictured dressed as a Nazi.

The Halifax-based company say the Taliban outfit comes with a no quibble money-back guarantee.

The company also sells World War II German Gestapo-style uniforms.

There are many outfits on sale for about £20 that campaigners have argued show people with mental health conditions as "dangerous".

A range of costumes involving strait jackets, escaped "psychos" and masks were available to purchase.

Another user is selling a burqa as a fancy dress item, saying: "Burqa Costume Fancy Dress outfit stag party hen party Burqa burka Fits From size 8 up-to size 14 or XXL fits up-to size 22... UK Made from a sports polyester lightweight and durable.”

An eBay spokesperson said: “We have removed these items from the site permanently.”

Sue Baker, Director of Time to Change the mental health anti-stigma campaign run by Mind and Rethink Mental Illness, said: “Depicting mental illness in this way fuels some of the worst myths that those of us with mental health problems are ‘scary’ or ‘dangerous’.

“We are finally starting to see attitudes shift, but this will only serve to set us back by reinforcing sad old stereotypes.”

Four years ago supermarket chains Tesco and Asda withdrew Halloween outfits after they were criticised for stigmatising people with mental health issues.

Asda dropped its "mental patient fancy dress costume", and Tesco later withdrew its "psycho ward" outfit.

Both stores apologised for any offence caused and agreed to make donations to Mind.
