The Kilkenny native's husband said she was in the shower when she suddenly took ill - but he was unable to resuscitate her.

Devastated Andrew Wayland said: "She was my absolute rock. I am just devastated. Nobody can get to terms with it.

"She had just found out that she was a few weeks pregnant and had been to see the doctor for a check-up. The doctor rang in tears, she can’t believe it.

"I tried to resuscitate her and had 999 on the line. The ambulance crew came and they tried too but she died at home."

Keen archer Sonja married Andrew in late December and had a one-year-old son Cameron together. She was also mum to young Cian and was close to Andrew's son Calum.

Legal secretary Sonja was about to go swimming with her baby Cameron and Andrew when she took ill.

Andrew said: "She was a fantastic person. We were married in Whitechurch and she will be buried in Whitechurch Tuesday.

"She was a great, loyal friend and a very thoughtful person. She was a kind-hearted mother who doted on he children and the baby was her little pride and joy.

"It’s just gut wrenching, especially with the baby, but then the baby won’t understand. Everyone is just devastated.

"She was just 34. Sonja was a great confidante and friend and she had a huge circle of friends.

"I would say to everyone to go home and give everyone they love a hug. Hug your kids as you never know when something like this will happen.

"Words cannot even begin to express how I, the boys and the family are feeling now, Sonja was such an amazing and loving woman snatched away from us in a flash and far, far too young.

"Sonja, we will always love you and will never ever forget you. You kept us all connected."

She was laid to rest today at noon in Christchurch Cathedral, Waterford.
