Dopey sailor sinks pal’s Land Rover in docks trying to launch boat in Devon harbour
The driver was rescued but the 4x4 ended up in the sea and recovered the next day
A DOPEY sailor sank a Land Rover he borrowed from a friend to launch his boat from a harbour slipway.
But he mixed up the controls and the 4x4 ended up in the sea at Brixham Breakwater, Devon, on Saturday.
The driver was rescued before the vehicle sank. The soggy Land Rover was recovered the next day using giant air bags which floated it to the surface.
A Coastguard spokesman said it was then towed to the inner harbour and lifted out by crane. He added: “This is no laughing matter. I overheard the driver talking about his experiences. He was lucky to get out alive.”
Devon and Cornwall Police said: "We were made aware of the incident at 1.34pm on Saturday by the fire crews.
"It appears that a vehicle with a trailer was on the slipway on the Breakwater but has somehow ended up in the water.
"Coastguard crews were alerted and one man was rescued from inside the vehicle.
"No medical assistance was required or needed for the man when the coastguard retrieved and rescued him from the vehicle."
