What happened on 11 September 2001?

Back in 2001 the world looked on in shock as Islamist extremists crashed hijacked planes into the World Trade Centre.

The attack was the biggest ever seen in the States, with 2,996 people killed and more than 6,000 wounded in the horrific attack.

Four planes were hijacked in total, with two ploughing into the Twin Towers, another hit the Pentagon in Washington and the fourth crashed into a field in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania.

Both towers collapsed following the impact, with debris causing more deaths and injury on the streets below, many people including the emergency response teams lost their lives trying to save others.
