Parents hit out at ‘Army-like’ school rules after teachers tell pupils to be in bed by 9pm, wake up at 6.30am and vomit in a bucket if sick

The Norfolk  school will also force students to walk 'single-file' and 'not turn around and talk to each other'

FUMING parents have slammed a troubled school for its "Army-like" rules that force children have a 9pm bedtime and a 6.30am alarm set.

Pupils are also being warned they will be given buckets to be sick in if they need to vomit in class and their mobiles will be taken away for weeks if seen.

Teachers at Great Yarmouth High School in Norfolk are also making students walk single file in corridors and have told them they are not allowed to turn around.

Furious parents have already set up a Facebook group voicing their concerns over the tough new crackdown.

The group branded the school's new policies "Army-like" - and is staging a meeting for worried parents on Thursday.

Mum Tracy Cole said: "Love to know why my daughter was put in isolation today and made to cry on her first day back.

"I'm fuming, thing is she doesn't even know why she was put in there."

The hardline regime is being enforced as the troubled school got some of the worst GCSE results in England and Wales in the summer.

A tough new head has been drafted in after the school became a Charter Academy last month when it was taken over by the Inspiration Trust.

Barry Smith, who's taking over from Louise Jackson, has sent out a letter to parents setting out his high expectations.

A leaked document also reveals behaviour rules include confiscating phones if they are seen or heard until the end of the next half term.

One rule states: "We all know children say things like that to get out of work.

"You never pretend to be ill to get out of work because we expect you to work through it. If you feel sick we will give you a bucket. If you vomit - no problem! You've got your bucket.

"That's probably all your body wanted - to vomit. If you are really ill we will make sure you get all the attention you need."

Pupils must also walk in "single file" to lessons and not talk to classmates or turn around.

Children must also follow uniform rules or be placed in isolation, and pupils must "only ever look at a teacher or where the teacher has directed you to look".

There are also instructions for pupils out of school - including: "As soon as you finish school you go straight home" - and a 9pm bedtime and a 6.30am alarm should be enforced.

The Inspiration Trust said the school had now developed a stricter approach - but that it was needed to drive up performance.

Spokesman James Goffin said: "This summer Great Yarmouth High returned the lowest GCSE results in the county - and for many years has underperformed compared to other schools in the borough.

"We don't believe this is good enough and we don't believe it is because our pupils are any less able.

"What they need is the right environment to learn and succeed. Children can't learn in unruly classrooms.

"Charter has a stricter approach to things like behaviour and uniform so that everyone gets the chance to learn."
