ART ATTACK

Scaffolders hit back at ‘snob’ artist who posted McDonald’s pic with caption ‘these guys look like they got 1 GCSE’ – with scathing critique of her paintings

London tradesmen Marc Clarey and Warren Butt slammed Hetty Douglas' art work as 'crude and ignorant'

TWO scaffolders sneered at by painter Hetty Douglas hit back yesterday with a review of her work - and collapsed into fits of giggles.

We showed examples to Marc Clarey and Warren Butt - mocked on Instagram for supposedly having few qualifications - during a building site break.

And the verdict from the pair of grafters: "It's not art as we know it!"

Snooty Hetty, 25, posted a photograph on Instagram of Marc and Warren in Shaftesbury Avenue McDonald's in central London saying: "These guys look like they got one GCSE."

Her own website makes the lofty claim: "‘[She] makes work that represents both the light and dark that comes with simply existing.

"Underneath the tantalising layers of Douglas’s work lies a clear pursuit for something that truly matters – a stable place and a true identity in a world that can happily chew you up, spit you out and not think twice about it."

The paintings we showed Marc, 29, and Warren, 40, had slogans on them littered with swear words and spelling mistakes.

The wannabee-Monet from Nottingham who works in a skate shop in Soho spells one phrase: "Pleassse can we f***".

Dad Warren - who has an NVQ Level Two in scaffolding which equals five GCSEs - mused: "Hatty is emulating her simmering existential turmoil on canvas.

"There is a hint of Picasso's impressionism, fused with Jackson Pollock's hectic style.

"But her attempts at creating reactionary 21st century symbolism in abstract form are crude and ignorant."

He went on: "But seriously, I'm not going to have a go at her and say it is rubbish - beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

"The art speaks for itself - only she knows what they are about, and she appears to be angry.

"One thing is certain, the tattoos on my arm took a lot longer to do and, to me at least, are nicer to look at .

"If I had to pick one for my toilet wall, it would be the rude one with the sketch of two bodies (6).

"And if she did ever become famous, I could put it on eBay!"

Marc - who has an NVQ level two and three GCSEs - added: "They remind me of this paintings done by chimpanzees and elephants in a zoo.

"I know I am biased, but my eldest daughter aged eight is quite good at drawing, she does scenes from our holidays and princesses. I would rather have her work on the wall.

Scaffolder targeted by posh artist in a mocking picture calls on her to apologise

"She is desperate to be 'street', using a word like 'peng' in one of her slogans, which translates to 'good looking'. I think she is going for the 'yoof' market.

"If I had to choose, it would be the one with the bulldog sketch. I could put it above the kennel - but we would have to get a dog first.

"A lot of them look the same, though I suppose you could say that about Salvador Dali."
