Most Tory voters want Boris Johnson for PM, poll reveals… and hardly anyone believes Theresa May’s vow to stick around for the next election
A poll revealed that the Foreign Secretary is favourite to replace the PM with backbencher Jacob Rees-Mogg coming in second
TORY voters do not believe Theresa May will be able to fulfil her promise to fight the next election and Boris Johnson is the favourite to replace her, according to a new poll.
Second place in the poll went to Jacob Rees-Mogg the backbencher whose star has been rising of late and just behind him was the Chancellor Philip Hammond.
The survey, commissioned by , also found that most voters don't believe the PM would walk away from any Brexit negotiations without a deal.
It comes after Mrs May told reporters "I'm not quitting" during her trip to Japan last week, but the poll indicates most voters don't believe her.
Twenty-one percent of Tory voters said the best bet to revive their chances at the next election was the Foreign Secretary.
This will be welcome news to Boris after Times columnist Rachel Sylvester wrote that diplomatic sources told her White House officials “don’t want to go anywhere near Boris because they think he’s a joke."
Fellow Old Etonian and Rees-Mogg's showing in the poll will also come as a boost to the Brexiteer as his profile continues to rise.
Forty percent of Tories say it is unthinkable that the Prime Minister will lead the party into the next election .
The news comes as Labour was accused last night of an underhand bid to delay Brexit by getting MPs bogged down with endless votes.
Furious David Davis blasted the “unscrupulous” tactics as Jeremy Corbyn’s troops threatened to cause chaos in the Commons this week.
Labour has vowed to block the Great Repeal Bill putting EU powers back into UK law.
But Brexit Secretary Mr Davis said a delay would cause the “cliff-edge” departure he is trying to prevent.
He said: “Their only motivation is chaos.”
Labour yesterday demanded changes in the Bill, including keeping Britain in the single market, customs union and European Court of Justice.
With a working majority of just 13, the Tories will struggle to pass the Bill unchanged.
Mr Davis, writing for The Sun on Sunday today, says: “Jeremy Corbyn’s unscrupulous Labour Party threaten to delay, bog down and defeat this essential piece of legislation.”
He said giving control to British judges and lawmakers was the most important step for a smooth Brexit.
