WHEELY RECKLESS

Banned driver jailed after dashcam caught him racing £85,000 sports car at 115mph in 30mph zone

Kamar Farooq - who already had a driving ban - was handed a prison sentence after tearing along the wrong side of the road before crashing into a roundabout

HEART-STOPPING dashcam footage of a banned driver racing an £85,000 sports car through 30-limit residential streets at 115mph saw him behind bars last night.

Kamar Farooq, 30, was filmed by cops and a helicopter tearing along the wrong side of the road before crashing into a roundabout.

The reckless driver, from Aston, Birmingham, was then seen careering into a car at a petrol station in the drive's final dramatic moments.

Farooq denied being behind the wheel of the £85,000 BMW M3, callously jumping into the backseat with two other men to claim he was a passenger.

But CCTV images from earlier in the evening proved the driver was wearing the same clothes as he was when he was arrested.

Farooq had already been banned from driving after speeding off from a police traffic stop last year.

PC Robert Lattimer, from the roads policing unit, said: "This was reckless driving by someone who should not have been behind the wheel.

"Officers had suspicions around the vehicle and tried to pull it over; but Farooq failed to stop and hit speeds of 115mph in 30mph zones."

"He tried to deny being the driver despite our investigations which secured such strong evidence against him.

"This was a high performance vehicle and the outcome could have been much worse.

"He now faces a long time behind bars rather than behind the wheel of a car."

West Midlands Police patrol officers became suspicious when they spotted Farooq behind the wheel on the Washwood Heath Road in Birmingham on September 23 last year.

When they tried to pull him over he sped away, reaching 115mph before crashing the car in the Castle Bromwich area of the city.

Farooq was convicted at Birmingham Crown Court and jailed for two-and-a-half years for dangerous driving and getting behind the wheel while disqualified.

He was also given a ten-year driving ban.
