Aberdeen FC star Gary Mackay-Steven rescued from Glasgow’s River Kelvin after hour and a half in the freezing water after jumping in on night out

The former Celtic star was saved by firemen around 4am on Sunday morning and rushed to the city's Queen Elizabeth Hospital suffering from hypothermia

TERRIFIED pals watched in horror as footie ace Gary Mackay-Steven was plucked from a freezing river by the emergency services.

They raised the alarm to save the winger, 26, who survived around 90 minutes in Glasgow's River Kelvin after leaping in on a night out.

It’s understood one friend tried to haul him out of the icy water in Glasgow after yesterday’s 2.40am drama.

The was eventually rescued by firemen just after 4am. He was suffering from hypothermia.

A source said: “People couldn’t believe what was happening.

“It appears someone jumped in the water of their own accord to help. It was terrifying."

Police and fire crews raced to the scene after getting reports of a man falling into the water near the Benalder Street bridge in the city’s west end.

A boat was dispatched to help look for the ex- ace and, after he was found, a specialist water rescue team pulled him from the river.

He was taken to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital for treatment but last night his condition was not known.

It’s believed had been in the nearby Sanctuary nightclub and had left after an incident inside.

He’s understood to have been enjoying a night out with a fellow footballer.

Hours earlier he’d been on the bench for Aberdeen in their 4-3 win over at Firhill.

Last night, a Fire and Rescue Service spokesman confirmed the call-out.

He said: “At 2.46am we were alerted to reports of a man in the water at the River Kelvin near Benalder Bridge.

“Water rescue crews assisted him out of the water. He was transferred into the care of paramedics after suffering effects of hypothermia.”

Cops added: “Emergency services attended and a full search of the area was carried out with the male being located.”

He later starred for Airdrie and Dundee United. His dazzling displays at Tannadice earned him a Scotland cap in 2013.

He sealed a £250,000 move to Parkhead in 2015 before joining Aberdeen this summer.

No Dons official was available for comment last night.
