Yorkshire Ripper Peter Sutcliffe’s sight has been fixed after £2,000 laser eye surgery paid for by the NHS
YORKSHIRE Ripper Peter Sutcliffe’s sight has been saved using laser eye surgery paid for by the NHS.
The serial killer was whisked out of jail amid high security for the procedure to clear his vision.
And Sutcliffe, 71, has told pals he is delighted with the results as he can now see well enough to watch TV and to read and write letters.
But Neil Jackson, whose mother, Emily, was Sutcliffe’s second victim in 1976, said he was angry and horrified that he had the £2,000 treatment.
Neil, 59, said: “They should have let him go blind. He never had any pity on anyone so why should society bend over backwards to make him happy.”
Sutcliffe, locked up for life for killing 13 women, lost the sight in his left eye in a 1997 attack and has been losing the vision in his other eye.
The laser surgery marks the end of two years of treatment, costing taxpayers tens of thousands of pounds.
Sutcliffe was taken early one morning in handcuffs from HMP Frankland, Co Durham, for the procedure at Sunderland Eye Infirmary.
A source said: “They were not taking any chances and the total cost of the operation to get him to the eye unit would have been really high.
“He was unsteady on his feet and vision was very blurred straight after it happened, so he had to be helped around.
“And he fell over in jail as well, injuring himself.”
Sutcliffe told a pal: “The treatment hurt like hell but it was worth it. It is great what they have done and I am really grateful.”
